Celebrate Black History Month with Access Health Louisiana! Join us in honoring 5 incredible Black healthcare heroes whose excellence made history. From groundbreaking research to pioneering leadership, their contributions have shaped our nation’s healthcare system and beyond. Let’s honor and learn from these trailblazers this Black History Month!

JAMES MCCUNE SMITH

MD (1813-1865)

•  First black American to receive a medical degree

•  First black person to own and operate a pharmacy  in the U.S.

•  First black physician to be published in U.S. medical journals

•  Used medical and statistical expertise to challenge misconceptions about race, physiology,  and intelligence

       (Association of American Medical College) 

   

REBECCA LEE CRUMPLER

MD {1831-1895)

The first Black woman in the U.S. to earn a medical degree\ • Began working as a nurse, despite having no formal training • Wrote Book of Medical Discourses, one of the very first medical publications by an African American • Spent much of her life caring for formerly enslaved people through the Freedmen’s Bureau (Association of American Medical College)

DANIEL HALE WILLIAMS

MD (1856-1931)

One of the first people to successfully perform open-heart surgery • Founded the first interracial hospital, Provident Hospital and Training School • Co-founded the National Medical Association • The first African American physician admitted to the American College of Surgeons (Jackson State University)

REGINA MARCIA BENJAMIN

MD, MBA (1956 – )

President Barack Obama’s nominee for U.S. Surgeon General. Served from 2009- 2013. • The first African American female president of a state medical society • 1 of 25 recipients of the “genius awards” given by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. • Founder and CEO of BayouClinic in Bayou La Batre, Louisiana (Xavier & Tulane School of Business alumnus) (Blackpast.org)
