Celebrating Togetherness in New Orleans
Family Equality Day took place on Sunday, June 13th at Longue Vue Gardens in New Orleans. The AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC) and Access Health Louisiana participated as a resource partner. Family Equality Day is a free, family-focused event meant to celebrate diversity and inclusion during Pride month. This was the 6th annual Family Equality Day at the Longue Vue House and was celebrated safety outside, to comply with COVID restrictions. 
Despite the heat, 500 people came together to celebrate Pride. Adults and children alike enjoyed dance and drag performances, Drag Queen Story Time, fan decorating, jewelry making and the sunny weather. A children’s march ended the day including a second line around the Longue Vue House grounds.
Access Health Louisiana and the AETC provided information about its services during the event and raffled off prizes to families in attendance. Some of the prizes included $50 Walmart gift cards, exercise equipment, school supplies and kid’s toys!
This event is one of many during Pride month that brought the community together to celebrate not only the diversity of families, love, and gender expression, but the racial and ethnic diversity of the Greater New Orleans community. Sunday highlighted the need for events for LGBTQIA+ families so that community can be found, especially during difficult times. Recognizing how we can best provide and care for New Orleans’ LGBTQ community is essential for our work as health care providers.
