The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded Central Louisiana schools with Access Health Louisiana a distance-learning and telemedicine program grant totaling $676,817.
The funding will be used to purchase telehealth equipment to support school-based health center services.
Access Health Louisiana operates 18 school-based health centers within Cenla, including Rapides, Allen, Avoyelles, Grant, LaSalle and Natchitoches parishes.
“Some of the telehealth equipment will be used for primary care and some may be used for behavioral health services,” said Chenier Reynolds, Senior Vice President of School Health, Access Health Louisiana. “School-based health services are a collaboration between school districts, parents, the providers and the students to make medical decisions all to benefit the students.”
Seventeen of those school-based health centers are operated in partnership with CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria. The equipment will be utilized for students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The opportunity to have health services delivered to schools will allow an easier way for parents to take their kids to a doctor’s appointment by having those services in the school.
