Syphilis is on the RISE

Syphilis is on the rise in New Orleans and Louisiana, especially among young and pregnant people. According to the latest CDC data, Louisiana ranks 9th in the country for primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis–the most infectious stages of the disease–and 7th in congenital syphilis. Zooming into Orleans Parish, state data show these five zip codes reported the highest P&S syphilis rates in 2022: 70116, 70117, 70119, 70126 and 70130.

The bad news: without treatment, syphilis can cause serious health problems, including organ damage and blindness. The good news: syphilis is preventable and curable in its early stages.

That’s why the City of New Orleans Health Department City of New Orleans Louisiana Department of Health today is launching Get It* On Nola, a bright, bold education campaign designed to equip residents with the facts, connect them to resources, and combat stigma. Collaborating with the Louisiana Public Health Institute (LPHI), Get It* On Nola has conducted community surveys and interviews to identify common misconceptions and access barriers.
