SHOP THE OUT ISLES FOR BETTER HEALTH

Shopping the outer aisles (or perimeter) of the grocery store is a strategy to prioritize whole, unprocessed foods like fresh produce, meats, seafood, and dairy. This area usually houses nutrient-dense foods, helping to avoid the high sugar, sodium, and preservatives found in many center-aisle processed items.

Key Perimeter Sections:

Produce Section: Focus on filling your cart with colorful vegetables and fruits.

Meat and Seafood Counter: Choose fresh, lean meats, poultry, and fish.

Dairy and Refrigerated Section: Pick up milk, plain yogurt, and cheese.

Bakery: Look for fresh-baked whole-grain breads, avoiding those with long shelf-lives.

Tips for Success:

Shop in Season: Buy produce when it is in season for better taste and lower prices.

Look High and Low: Check the top and bottom shelves for better prices and varied options.

Read Labels: While the perimeter is healthier, still check yogurt and dressings for added sugar.

Go to the Back: For fresh dairy and meat, pick items from the back of the shelf for the latest expiration dates.

Utilize Freezers: The frozen aisle (often on the perimeter) is excellent for nutritious veggies and fruit

FUN FACT!

Just about everything on these isles is approved for SNAP benefits and the Louisiana purchase cards.
