Health Leadership Change

Ralph Abraham, M.D. – CDC Principal Deputy Director

Governor Jeff Landry announced on December 8, 2025 that Dr. Evelyn Griffin will replace Dr. Ralph Abraham as Surgeon General of Louisiana. The move comes after the Trump Administration selected Dr. Abraham to become second in command at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). On December 15, 2025, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. swore in Dr. Abraham as Principal Deputy Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He officially begins his duties in Atlanta on January 5, 2026.

Evelyn Griffin, M.D. – Louisiana Surgeon General

Dr. Evelyn Griffin is highly regarded in her field as a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist credentialed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is one of the first robotically trained gynecologic surgeons in her region. In obstetrics, Dr. Griffin’s work focused on reducing maternal morbidity and mortality. She completed her medical degree at Ross University School of Medicine and completed her residency at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. She practiced for 15 years in a multispecialty clinic and hospital system and currently works as an obstetric hospitalist. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Griffin serves on the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices, providing guidance to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Louisiana Department of Health Secretary Bruce Greenstein says the role of the Surgeon General is “critical to improving health outcomes” in our state. As a strong voice for nutrition and healthy foods, Dr. Griffin looks forward to “making Louisiana healthy again.”
