New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell selected Access Health Louisiana Infectious Disease Physician MarkAlain Dery to give her a flu shot. During last year’s flu season, there were nearly 80,000 flu cases nationally and 1,600 flu-related deaths in Louisiana. Mayor Cantrell says, “getting a flu shot is like putting on a seatbelt. It protects you in the best way possible. I’m getting a flu shot to show the residents of New Orleans that their health matters. In order to continue to stay afloat and standing tall, we want them to be as healthy as possible. Taking preventative matters like getting a flu shot is important to the City of New Orleans.” The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends annual flu shots for everyone over the age of 6 months old. People most at-risk are young children, pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses (asthma, diabetes, heart or lung diseases). Flu season activity generally begins to increase in October and often peaks around February. Dr. Dery says that people don’t get sick from getting a flu shot. When you get a flu shot and you feel achy afterwards, that’s actually your body’s immune system at work. After Dr. Dery vaccinated the mayor, he gave flu shots to members of her staff as well.
