Access Health Louisiana (AHL) is teaming up with United Way of Southeast Louisiana to offer free tax preparation services for a second year in a row.  AHL is participating in United Way’s VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Tax Prep Service.  United Way volunteer Christina Smothers will staff the St. Bernard Community Health Center located at 8050 West Judge Perez every Wednesday morning from 10am-Noon.  Jessy Murillo will staff the Kenner Community Health Center located on the first floor inside the Esplanade Mall (1401 West Esplanade Ave.) every Friday morning from 8:30-11:30am.  Tax preparation is not done on site.  Taxpayers may meet with the United Way volunteers on the dates and times specified and turn over their W-2s and other information.  Here’s what you need to bring:  a photo i.d., copy of last year’s tax return, social security card, birth date, all W-2 and 1099 forms, interest and dividend 1099 forms, amount paid for daycare in 2018, bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit, proof of foreign status and form 1095A from the Marketplace.  If you are married filing a joint tax return, your spouse must be present and bring their identification cards as well. When your taxes are completed and ready to be filed, the volunteer will call you and schedule a time for you to come back in and sign your tax return.  The VITA program offers free tax help to people who make $56,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and those with limited English.  IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.  Taxpayers who come to the clinic during the scheduled times can also receive information about programs that provide financial education, homebuyer education, down payment assistance and low interest car loans.  If you made less than $66,000 last year and have an email address, you can file your taxes online at www.unitedwaysela.org/vita.  The free tax preparation services will be available in AHL clinics on the specified dates and times through tax season which ends in April.
