The Ruth Fertel/Tulane Community Health Center has deep roots in New Orleans’ history. Named for the late Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse restauranteur, Ruth Fertel, the building is a monument not only to healthcare in the city, but to education as well. Conveniently located at the intersection of North Broad and Orleans Avenue, the clinic offers patients services including: Adult and Pediatric Primary Care, Behavioral Health, as well as legal services by appointment. It also serves as an educational hub for resident physicians with Tulane Medical School.
The community health center operates just as the late Ruth Fertel hoped it would. A graduate of Louisiana State University and former Tulane employee, Ruth was committed to education and healthcare in her Mid-City neighborhood. This is why Ruth’s Hospitality Group, Inc. donated the old Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse building to Tulane in 2009. Tulane, with the help of Access Health Louisiana, transformed the building into the Ruth Fertel/Tulane Community Health Center.
The clinic now continues Ruth Fertel’s mission of helping the underserved living within the community. It is a model for healthcare innovation in New Orleans. Patients cannot only receive preventive and diagnostic care, but take advantages of other services. Those services include: Ophthalmology, Infectious Disease diagnosis and treatment, apply for Medicaid on site, weight loss studies and participation in healthy living walking groups. As an added benefit, patients of Ruth Fertel/Tulane clinic also qualify for medications through our discount pharmacy program. With convenient hours of operation, scheduling an appointment with a provider is easy.
While most commercial insurances, Medicaid and Medicare are accepted, patients are never turned away for care due to their inability to pay. A discount sliding fee scale is offered based on a patient’s household size and income.
The Ruth Fertel/Tulane Community Health Center is a member of the Access Health Louisiana (AHL) Network, the largest network of Federally Qualified Health Centers in Louisiana.
